There seems to be a dramatic deterioration in the power situation in Zimbabwe. Faced with a severe funding crisis, Zimbabwe is unable to find a solution to the ongoing power blackouts. The crisis is accelerated due to the water situation of hydropower plants as well as old and obsolete thermal Power plants in the country.
Speaking to the media Energy minister Soda Zhemu said that the country is unable to meet the average daily demand of around 1600 megawatts. The current total available capacity is between 1250 and 1350 from both internal sources and imports. The government is making efforts to seek funding for meeting the additional capacity by accessing our neighbours in the region.
Last week, due to poor water availability, the Zambezi River Authority ordered ZESA to shut down Kariba South Hydro-Power Station until January. The Power station had reportedly exceeded its water ration. The minister, however, clarified that the station will only be shut down completely during Christmas days. it will be generating about 300 megawatts daily until a review of the water situation is proposed next year.
