Zimbabwe to revisit tally of fund inflows from China

203

Zimbabwean government will hold parleys with the Chinese Embassy in Harare to reconcile how much Harare received from Beijing as development partner support for 2019.

There was considerable variance between the figures Zimbabwean Finance and Economic Development Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube published in the National Budget Statement presented in Parliament last week and figures from the Chinese Embassy. The decision comes close on the heels of questions raised by the Chinese Government on the Budget figures released in the Budget document.  The alacrity shown by the Zimbabwean government is indicative of the importance of being assigned by the host country Zimbabwe toward Chinese investments. Of late, China has invested in several multi-sectoral billion-dollar investment projects for Zimbabwe in 2019 in areas like mining, manufacturing, steel and hospitality sectors. There was a boom in expressions of interest by top Chinese companies keen on investing in Zimbabwe. However, the continuing civil unrest can torpedo their investment plans.
