Zimbabwe to promote the use of Electric Vehicles

Zimbabwe is committed to adopting clean energy solutions for the transport sector according to Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona.

Zimbabwe is committed to adopting clean energy solutions for the transport sector according to Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona. Speaking at the 85th Session of the Inland Transport Committee (ITC) held in Geneva, Switzerland, he disclosed that the country is moving towards adopting the use of smart energy. The Central Mechanical Equipment Department (CMED) has bought electric vehicles from a Chinese company. Some of them are serving as shuttle cars at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.

CMED has been advised to also explore the possibility of adopting urban commuter services using electric buses which will be more economical for urban commuters.

 Minister Mhona said, efforts have been made to develop systems, some of which have been adopted under international regulatory institutions such as the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). He also reinforced the point that Zimbabwe is committed to cooperation under the United Nations System and guided by the 2030 Agenda. The country also pledged its support to the adoption of international good practices and standards on all matters under the purview of the ITC. He added that Zimbabwe developed the Climate Change Policy, the Energy Renewable Policy, and National Climate Change Response Strategy, etc aimed at mitigating climate change.
