Zimbabwe has suspended the by-elections scheduled for December 5 indefinitely. Supporting the decision by the government in the National Assembly, Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said that Zimbabwe was still under Covid-19 restrictions and by-elections would risk the lives of people.

He added that the postponement was very much Constitutional and in line with the health environment and curfew prevailing in the country. He was responding to a question raised by another MP, who questioned why Zimbabwe had suspended by-elections when the World Health Organisation had given approval for carrying out political activities and some countries were holding elections. He assured that the suspension will be lifted once the situation gets normalised.

Acting Speaker of the National Assembly, Cde Tatenda Mavetera, informed that the Parliamentary Legal Committee was still examining the Statutory Instrument issued suspending by-elections.
