Zimbabwe Set to Launch ZimSat-3: A New Era in Earth Observation

(3 Minutes Read)

Zimbabwe is preparing to launch its third Earth observation satellite, ZimSat-3, just months after the deployment of its second satellite, ZimSat-2. This initiative, led by the Zimbabwe National Geospatial and Space Agency (ZINGSA), aims to strengthen the country’s abilities in mineral exploration, environmental monitoring, drought forecasting, and mapping human settlements.

In addition to ZimSat-3, Zimbabwe is working on several communication satellites designed to enhance ground-based telecommunications. These satellites will improve network coverage and provide satellite internet access, tackling connectivity issues in rural and remote areas.

ZINGSA’s director-general, Painos Gweme, confirmed that multiple satellite projects are in progress, highlighting that the objective is not only to launch satellites but also to ensure they meet practical national requirements.

Zimbabwe’s entry into the space sector began with the launch of ZimSat-1 in November 2022, followed by ZimSat-2 in November 2024, which was launched from Russia’s Vostochny Cosmodrome. To support these developments, ZINGSA has upgraded the Mazowe Ground Control Station to accommodate advanced frequency bands, enhancing the country’s satellite communication capabilities. The agency is also actively surveying mining towns impacted by illegal mining to ensure public and infrastructural safety.
