Zimbabwe’s government re-imposed a national lockdown following a spurt in Covid-19 cases. However, essential services, such as hospitals, pharmacies and supermarkets will remain operational. Initially, the fresh lockdown is for 30 days and may be extended depending on the ground level situation.

The government first imposed a nationwide lockdown in March to contain the spread of the pandemic. But later it  was gradually eased since it started impinging the production and the economy had to bear the brunt..

Speaking on the severity of the present situation, Vice President and Health minister Constantino Chiwenga  said that there had been a huge spike in cases  in the festive season. The number of cases doubled in the festive season and the number of infections recorded throughout the year. With the new lockdown, gatherings have been reduced to a maximum of 30 people and a curfew is in place from 6pm to 6am.
