Zimbabwe’s Electoral Act Amendment Bill, 2022 that was gazetted recently will disqualify candidates with criminal conviction for election to National Assembly or a local council. The Bill will disqualify legislators or councillors accused of physical violence or dishonesty crimes and get convicted within a period of 12 months before the date of nomination as a candidate.
Candidate with criminal conviction, will be allowed to contest if their sentence is less than six months, pardoned or their conviction set aside.

Pro-democracy champions in Zimbabwe have been lobbying for electoral reforms for long. Human Rights activists allege that the Amended Bill is a far cry from what they have been lobbying for. They say that it reflected a lack of political will to bring comprehensive electoral reforms.
