In order to prevent illegal activities, especially smuggling and the irregular movement of people between the two countries, Zimbabwe and South Africa have tightened security along the Limpopo border. During the last month, almost 15000 people were arrested for offenses like border jumping and smuggling.
The arrested people included smugglers, illegal vendors, Covid-19 protocols violators, and irregular migrants. After realising that the country was losing millions of revenue in terms of import duty, Zimbabwe beefed up security along its border with South Africa in January last year.
South African Home Affairs department has also set up roadblocks to prevent illegal Zimbabwean immigrants from entering the country. Hundreds of Zimbabwean immigrants were reportedly sneaking illegally into South Africa returning to work after visiting their families during the festive season.
