Energy giant – ZESCO of Zambia has about 50,000 backlogs of applications for new connections. The company anticipates clearing within the stipulated timelines. The backlog was caused by non-reflective capital contribution.   For every connection to the customer, ZESCO shares the cost in the ratio of 3 to 7.

The time taken for connecting power after a client has completed the application process depends on the type of application. There are two different timelines for  every type of application:  standard and non-standard. Under standard application connection, ZESCO lays the service cables and installs prepaid meters.   In the case of the non-standard connection, the work involved is laying new poles, transformers and other related works.  .

Both types of connections, the quotation validity period is 90 days and customers connection is expected to be done within six months from the date of making payment.  However, these periods or timelines are contingent upon availability of materials. The demand for both domestic and commercial power supply in Zambia is on an expansion mode. Therefore the Zambian government continues to prioritize the sector and streamline the process of connecting individual households and establishments.
