ZESCO of Zambia proposes to increase electricity connection fees. It is one of the measures among other proposed hikes in tariffs contemplated. Over 70% of Zambia’s households are currently not connected to the electricity national grid.
According to the Energy Regulation Board (ERB), the official number of households connected to the national grid as of 30th June 2022 was about 1.2 million as against 3.5 million total households in the country. Assuming that the average family size is 5.5 people and a national projected population of about 19 million people, only about 30% of households in Zambia are connected to the electricity national grid, leaving the majority yet to be covered.

Yet, Zambia is keen to export electricity, when 70% of its citizens have no access to electricity at the household level.  The power utility has proceeded to request for an upward tariff adjustment of over 600%.
