Zero-Tariff Access: China Opens Doors for Zambian Macadamia Exports

(3 Minutes Read)

China and Zambia have entered into a new trade agreement permitting zero-tariff imports of Zambian macadamia nuts into China. The signing ceremony featured Wang Sheng, chargé d’affaires at the Chinese Embassy in Zambia, alongside Zambia’s Minister of Agriculture, Mtolo Phiri.

Wang highlighted that, in addition to this agreement and a previous one on Zambian blueberry exports, both nations are in discussions about expanding agricultural trade to include products like dried chili powder and avocados.

This initiative is part of a commitment made last September at the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation in Beijing, where China vowed to eliminate tariffs on all goods from least developed countries with which it has diplomatic ties, including Zambia.

Zambia’s macadamia nut sector, while currently small, is experiencing rapid growth. Most production occurs on large commercial farms. In 2023, Zambia produced around 2,000 metric tons of in-shell macadamia nuts, with about 95% earmarked for export.

With current trends in export growth and increased nursery tree imports from South Africa, Zambia’s macadamia production is projected to rise significantly in the coming years, potentially reaching 6,000 to 7,000 metric tons by 2028 and nearing 10,000 metric tons by 2030.
