Senior Chief Sikufele of Manyinga District complained about the illegal and indiscriminate felling of trees for timber. He said that the previous government issued timber concession licenses to cadres and foreigners and gave them the rights to make use of the precious resources for their vested interest at the expanse of the locals.

The people of Manyinga have not benefited from the natural resources in their own district, the Chief alleged. The forest cover, he said,  is dwindling in his chiefdom and has  called on the government to intervene and preserve the resources.

The chief called on the government to ensure that concession license holders harvest timber in a sustainable manner. Presently, he said that they work with complete immunity while exploiting the natural resources of the country.
