Zambian President Hichilema said that the social and economic development of the country could not be left to the government alone and stressed that all stakeholders should be fully involved in building the nation and the economy, particularly the private sector.

At a meeting of the Public Private Dialogue Forum with the theme  “Private Sector and Economic Development” at Mulungushi International Conference Centre held recently, President Hichilema said the government recognised the private sector as the engine for innovation and job creation.  The magnitude of job creation and business opportunities would come from the private sector. Therefore, it is  the responsibility of the public and private sector along with the  partner groups to work together to  drive economic development for the country.

President Hichilema highlighted   the contribution of the private sector to economic development in the country in the past years. It was limited in part by inadequate government uptake of recommendations coming from the private sector.  But, he assured such things would go now and there would be a transformation. Zambia is a land-linked country and should be the centre of production, processing, packaging, distribution, domestic market spot supply, regional and international market; he asserted. This will help the country realise the potential it has been talking about for years.

He added that economic development would expand the market and demand for goods and services for the private sector. The President assured that the PPDF, the party he represents, would provide a strengthened partnership between the public and private sector. It would also  promote a mechanism for structured interaction between government and the private sector on various matters affecting the economy.
