Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema said that his government would look at the designs of most bridges and dams in the country to ensure their safety and they comply with the standards laid down. The current designs were prescribed some time back and they were no longer in tune with the present standards.

Elaborating on the new designs, the President said that the new designs include replacing culverts with pillars that would allow water to flow while the construction of dams would take into consideration the concept of water harvesting.

The President was visiting the Magoye constituency in Mazabuka District, where a large part of the area was inundated in recent floods. President also interacted with flood victims and gathered first-hand information about their hardships.

Mentioning that many of the disasters could be avoided by taking proper care to build bridges and dams, the President stressed that his government would give priority to such works and would be delivered at the right price, quality, and time. He also directed the administration in the affected areas to contain flood-related epidemics and assured speeding up of the relief works in the affected areas.
