Zambian mine workers urge reopening of mine Chambishi Metals

The Mine Workers Union of Zambia (MUZ) has urged the government to expedite the process of reopening Chambishi Metals. The continued closure of the mine, the trade union leaders said has been negatively affecting the laid-off workers as well as the economy of the Copperbelt.

MUZ President Joseph Chewe said the continued closure of Chambishi Metals has affected the union membership.  It has deprived a generation of job opportunities in the country, besides denying the country business opportunities and subsequent revenue collection.

Management at Chambishi metals placed the mine on care and maintenance in January 2020, following failure to access raw materials such as cobalt from neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This has resulted in the loss of employment for many workers., affecting their livelihood and the people depending on them.
