Zambian Minister of Agriculture, Mtolo Phiri, said that various schemes were underway to transform agriculture to help Zambia emerge as the region’s food basket. As a part of this scheme, among other things, Zambia was undertaking the export of maize to other countries in the region, the minister observed.

Zambia recently signed a 30- million euros credit facility between Zanaco and the European Investment Bank (EIB) to increase smallholder farmers’ participation in market-integrated nutrition value chains. Becoming a food basket of the region would enable Zambia to take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which targets increasing agriculture exports to other countries. Funds available with Zanaco, the minister said, were key in supporting value chain development which will impact positively on farmers.

The credit to small farmers will be disbursed through the Zambia Agriculture Value Chain Facility, which is aimed at increasing access to finance.
