Zambia signs MoU with US to boost trade

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Zambia and the United States set forth the direction of bilateral commercial engagements which will prioritise the key sectors that are crucial for Zambia’s growth

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), will set forth a direction for commercial engagements, prioritise key sectors that are critical to Zambia. This agreement will catalyse the various elements across the U.S. government to enable the private sector to flourish in trade and investments to create jobs. The technical experts from the US Embassy and the U.S. Department of Commerce who have been working with their colleagues from the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry to come up with this MoU, which is agreeable to both countries.

This incredible partnership had come in the wake of Zambia’s implementation of an International Monetary Fund programme that is anchoring real economic reforms. Zambia is also tackling inflation and stabilising the national currency and implementing pro-growth policies.

The signing of the MoU is a result of Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema’s visits to the United States of America and Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Chipoka Mulenga’s subsequent meeting with the Secretary of Commerce of the United States of America. The deal was further cemented by the state visit of the Vice President of the United States of America, Kamala Harris. The MoU caters to a wide range of investment sectors including capacity building for Small and Medium Enterprises, technical assistance for bankable projects, and support for the growth of youth and women-led businesses in Zambia.

 Deputy Assistant Secretary for Middle East and Africa, from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Camille Richardson witnessed the signing of the MoU.
