Finnish envoy to Zambia, Saana Halinen stated that Zambia is a rising star of democracy in Africa. Zambia is all set to co-host the second summit for democracy, together with the United States of America, Costa Rica, the Netherlands, and the Republic of Korea. Zambia’s selection to co-host the African region comes against the background of the country’s strong commitment to democratic principles, good governance, respect for the rule of law, and human rights.

For the past 30 years, Zambia has been a regional model of peaceful and multi-party democracy. In 2021, Zambia witnessed its third transition of power when the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) won both presidential and legislative elections.

Halinen stated that the summit is an opportunity for Zambia to learn best practices from other functional democracies and explained that the lessons learned through the exchange of ideas will greatly help them to evolve to a higher level of democratic existence.
