Zambia began rotational load shedding on account of a planned generator outage at Maamba Coal Thermal Power Plant for routine maintenance. Also, there was a drastic reduction in the water level at the Kariba North Bank.

Zambia has introduced rotational electricity rationing because of the shutting down of the Maamba Coal Thermal Power Plant.  ZESCO said that as of 31st December 2022, the water level at Kariba Dam was  475.60 meters above sea level.  This situation has necessitated the reduction of generation at the 1080 megawatts power station facility to below 400 megawatts, affecting the power utility company’s ability to meet the system load/customer power demand, during the peak periods.
