Zambia’s Mopani Copper Mines will be closing down two shafts at its Nkana mine in Kitwe, a move that union leaders said could affect more than 2,000 workers. The company said in a statement that it would close operations at the Mindola north and central shafts of the Nkana mine. Instead, the company will focus on other activities. It has suspended operations at its Mindola north shaft in February after three workers were killed in a fire. The shafts, according to the company had reached their expiry date and it is dangerous to continue with the same shafts, which would have collapsed any time. Running of these two shafts which have become inefficient would also lead to economic losses, the company pointed out.
