Citing a lack of technical and financial capacity, Zambia has cancelled the license for Vodafone’s local franchise holder. In a recently issued statement, Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority said Vodafone Zambia would cease to operate from Oct. 20. The statement announced that the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority has cancelled network and service licenses issued to Mobile Broadband Limited trading as Vodafone Zambia Limited. The Authority alleged that Mobile Broadband Limited failed to fulfil the eligibility requirements and proved to be technically and financially incapable of meeting the obligations and terms and conditions of the license.
Afrimax, a telecommunications service provider in sub-Saharan Africa, was granted license by Vodafone in 2016 to provide high speed 4G data services using the Vodafone Zambia brand. The company, registered as Mobile Broadband Ltd, has been facing operational challenges and issued a statement in July. Vodafone on its part stated that its agreement with Afrimax was already terminated in April 2018.
