World Bank pegs Zimbabwe’s economy at 3.9%

In its latest report, the World Bank has projected that Zimbabwe’s economy will grow 3.9% this year. However, the country faces an alarming rise in poverty levels, especially in urban areas. According to the report, Zimbabweans living in rural areas are doing better than their counterparts in the urban areas thanks to subsistence farming. The country experienced good rains boosting the farming sector. Crops such as maize sweet potatoes, peas etc have recorded positive trends. Last week, the Zimbabwe government said the food insecurity among Zimbabweans has drastically declined because of the good rains the country had in the 2020/2021 agriculture season.

Mukami Kariuki, who heads the World Bank in Zimbabwe, said that the economy is expected to grow faster than its neighbors, rising from 3.9% in 2021 to 5.1% in 2022.The recovery could be faster depending on how the pandemic and regional economy performs, she added. f the country manages to sustain the momentum it can positively impact the lives of the people of Zimbabwe.
