The World Bank has unveiled plans to commit an additional US$750m to deepen access to electricity through the Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP). World Bank’s Director of Strategy and Operations for the Western Central African Region, Ms. Elizabeth Huybens, disclosed this while inspecting the 60 KiloWatts Mini-Grid project in Kilankwa Community, Kwali Area Council of Abuja.

This is the first national electrification project worth about US$350m and a successor project will come up for US$750m.   The Kilankwa project would assist the country in providing access to electricity to more people faster than it could have done by just extending the national grid. This project also will help Nigeria to introduce electric vehicles in the country.

Presently, the West African country is embarking on a massive project to replace the use of fossil fuels to reduce its carbon footprint. The World Bank is assisting the country to increase access of the people to clean energy by funding more such projects.
