The food and beverage industry in South Africa is heavily impeded by frequent power cuts, particularly its wine industry, which accounts for sizable export from the country. Many in the wine industry are staring at huge losses from the ongoing power shedding.

South Africa is the eighth largest wine producer in the world. The wine industry generates about US$3bn in revenue every year. Farmers and upstream stakeholders are extremely worried about the prospects of the industry as the country is in the harvesting season for the grapes. Non or inadequate lifting of grapes by the wine industry would create great hardships for the farmers and the industry alike.

Their representatives have urged the power provider-ESKOM- to supply them with power in the morning hours and immediately after lunch hours since these are the hours when they need the power the most. In the meantime, South Africa is looking to add additional electricity capacity through alternative sources and imports. However, experts opine that it is unlikely to happen in the short run.
