Director of Health of The Gambia Dr. Mustapha Bittaye confirmed the wave of child deaths from acute kidney failure, sending shockwaves across the country of 2.4 million people and around the world. The U.N.’s World Health Organization along with The Gambia’s government is investigating the cause of the deaths since August. The killer four medicines are cough and cold syrups produced by Maiden Pharmaceuticals Limited in India, according to reports.

The contaminated products have so far only been detected in the Gambia. However, there is the possibility of syrup being distributed to other countries, according to WHO sources. The U.N. health agency said it is pursuing investigations with the company and regulatory authorities in India. India’s federal and state regulators are conducting an inquiry into the contaminated medicines. The manufacturing unit is situated in Haryana, a state in the northern part of India.
