Due to very poor rainfall, Morocco’s grain harvest fell sharply by 67% this year dropping to 34 million quintals, the agriculture ministry said. The data released by the Ministry said that the soft wheat output stood at 18.9 million quintals, hard wheat at 8.1 million quintals and barley at 7 million quintals due to a drop of 34% in rainfall.

The country is scouting for wheat imports to build its stocks for 2022 and 2023. It is also reported that Morocco is set to export all of its barley needs valued at one million tonnes annually.

Traditionally a major share of Morocco’s wheat imports are sourced from France, Canada, the US and Argentina. According to sources, United Kingdom’s farmers’ organization has expressed interest in supplying vacuum wheat to Morocco. UK’s Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) has stated that the Moroccan market holds significant potential for UK wheat farmers.
