WAKEN Agro Fisheries in Solwezi, Zambia has spent K13 million in setting up a new fish breeding plant and expanding the existing one. It intends to increase its fish breeding from six tonnes to 40 tonnes on a monthly basis.
The company, which started running two years ago, breeds fish and fingerlings. These are sold to farmers and people in the district. The immediate task of the company is to take the breeding capacity to 40 tonnes. Its overall target is to produce at least 5,000 tonnes of fish monthly to meet the huge demand for different varieties of fish in the country.
Zambia’s estimated fish deficit is at 87,000 metric tonnes annually.
The firm is currently looking at reducing the cost and time spent on breeding fish by growing tilapia and other types of fish, which matures faster. Some varieties of fish have export markets as well.
