Vodacom Group has embarked on an ambitious project aimed at closing Africa’s digital skills gap by collaborating with tech companies like AWS, Microsoft, and Skillsoft. The initiative aims to improve the digital skills of 1 million young people across Africa by 2027.

The Vodacom Digital Skills Hub, which spans eight African countries, aims to upskill 1 million young people by 2027, equipping them with essential digital expertise to thrive in a rapidly digitising world. This initiative reflects Vodacom’s commitment to addressing the continent’s pressing challenges of unemployment, inequality, and limited access to education while fostering an inclusive digital society.

The Digital Skills Hub targets individuals aged 18 to 35, offering self-paced training to inspire careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields. With platforms like Talimy in Egypt, e-Fahamu in Tanzania, and VodaEduc in the DRC, Vodacom’s e-learning solutions make quality education accessible even in underserved areas. Programs such as AWS Educate provide a comprehensive curriculum covering cloud fundamentals, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, tailored to meet the learning needs of Africa’s youth.

The launch of the Digital Skills Hub is a testament to Vodacom’s commitment to pioneering the path to a digital and more inclusive Africa. By equipping Africa’s youth with critical digital skills, fostering innovation, creating opportunities, and laying the foundation for a future-ready continent.” With the International Finance Corporation (IFC) projecting over 230 million jobs requiring digital skills in Africa by 2030, such initiatives are timely and vital, stated Shameel Joosub, Vodacom Group CEO.
