Following fresh talks on the US-Kenya Strategic Trade and Investment Partnership, the United States Trade Representative Office (USTR) has sought views from American and Kenyan firms on the proposed agreement. A review of the Trump-era document started on July 14 after multiple interactions between the US and Kenyan officials. The new agreement is expected to be the basis for US engagement with the rest of Africa.
A statement by the United States Trade Representative Office (USTR), which is leading the initiative said that views received from interested parties will help the USTR to formulate objectives and positions for the agreement. The written comments must be submitted by September 16. The views received are expected to guide the negotiations under the US-Kenya Strategic Trade and Investment Partnership, USTR said this week in a public notice.
Firms have been asked to express their perspectives about general negotiations on agriculture, anti-corruption, digital economy, environment and climate change, transparency and good regulatory practices, micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, worker rights and protections and participation of women, youth, and others in the trade. Standards collaboration, customs, and trade facilitation, and other measures or practices that undermine fair market opportunities for US workers, farmers, ranchers, and businesses will also be part of the exercise. When the Us-Kenya talks were revived last month, the USTR said that an exercise to develop a road map for engagement between the two countries will be started within three months. The US and Kenyan negotiating teams are planning to meet in mid-October.
