The year 2024 has been dubbed the “super election year”, with elections in the EU, the US, India, South Africa, the UK, and many other countries. There is great concern that AI will be used to spread disinformation and undermine the democratic process
Re: Publica held in the German Capital Berlin since 2007, is Europe’s largest digital conference on the digital society. It is a convergence of digital experts, technocrats, innovators, incubators, and other stakeholders. This year’s event held from May 27th to 29th was a jamboree, wherein over 25,000 people participated. Every year, organizers zero in on a theme based on a contemporary issue. This time around the theme was: “Who cares?”. It may sound silly and casual but it has a lot of messages to transmit.
The theme triggered an intense debate and reflection. All, those revolved around Artificial Intelligence, its uses, both positive and negative, how it can change society positively, and how it can demonize.
The event had an emotive appeal. Organizers wanted people to start thinking about normative issues such as: who will take care of the elderly in the future. Who cares that society works? Who takes care of the poverty and destitution of people in the least developed countries and a lot of such vexatious issues?
And above all these concerns and questions there is one main theme – artificial intelligence (AI). It has good and bad uses, depending on the person who is using it. It can democratically distribute income and also help concentration of wealth and resources in a few. Organizations from all over the world are represented at the festival, including Digital Innovation in Pandemic Control (DIPC), which is trying to apply the lessons learned during the pandemic to health issues around the world.
