USAID pumps in $9.5 million to support Malawi’s fight against hunger

The US government’s has contributed $9.5 million through USAID (US Agency for International Development) to the World Food Programme (WFP) to support Malawi in its fight against hunger.

The fund will be used to provide emergency assistance in Malawi to vulnerable households, support livelihoods of community members, and boost capacity of national and local institutions to tackle food security issues, disaster risk management and emergency responses.

USAID Malawi Mission Director Catie Lott said In a statement that the objective of the US assistance through the WFP is to support efforts to increase food security and better manage seasonal shocks such as drought and flooding of Malawi. He added that the goal of the USAID is to help families and individuals produce and purchase reliable, quality food and in Malawi. It has endeavored to build the resilience of vulnerable communities against climatic shocks and improve their food security. The contribution will be used to provide cash and/or food transfers to 42,000 refugees hosted at Dzaleka Camp. Further, it will also be used to strengthen capacity and transfer skills to national and local institutions involved in food security, nutrition, disaster risk management, and emergency response.

USAID has been actively involved in supporting WFP in Malawi since 2017.
