Processing US visa applications and other services such as passport renewals of Lesotho citizens will no longer  be done in Maseru, the capital of Lesotho. The citizens have to apply to US Consulate General in Johannesburg  according to a statement by the US embassy in a weekend statement. The US embassy in Maseru will continue  to support the US citizens in need of emergency assistance in Lesotho, while the other routine services such as  passport renewals, immigrant visas, and notarial services will be shifted to US Consulate General in Johannesburg. Only diplomatic visa categories necessary for continued bilateral engagement between our two  nations will be processed in Maseru.
.
The embassy’s public affairs officer, of the US embassy Jasmine White, said the changes were introduced after  an extensive analysis of the visa application workload for Lesotho by the State Department’s Bureau of Consular  Affairs in Washington DC and has no bearing on the US-Lesotho bilateral relations. Though the current US Ambassador in Lesotho, Rebecca Gonzales’s tenure has now lapsed, she will continue to  lead the US embassy until successor Ambassador-designate Maria Brewer’s posting is confirmed.
