The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) updated its official website with a new map and information about Morocco. The newly updated map shows all of Morocco’s territory, explicitly recognizing the Western Sahara as an integral part of the North African country. The update comes just before President-elect Donald Trump takes office.
The CIA’s official website now describes Morocco’s map as showing major population centers, along with portions of neighboring countries and the North Atlantic. In the description, the CIA wrote that in 2020, the US recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over all of Western Sahara. In its factbook, the agency provides comprehensive information on Morocco’s geography, history, economy, political system, demographics, people, and key officials.
This update comes as the world’s attention turns to President-elect Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration tomorrow. US-Moroccan ties reached a historic turning point in 2020 when the Trump administration formally recognised Morocco’s sovereignty over the entire territory of Western Sahara.
The recognition included American support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal, which was described as serious, credible, and realistic and the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute.
