The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International
Development (USAID)  and the Federal Ministry of Finance signed a new
development partnership agreement with Ethiopia worth more than US$230
million. The agreement was signed between Admasu Nebebe, Ethiopia’s
State Minister of Finance and Sean Jones, USAID Mission Director.

As per the agreement, the US will invest in Ethiopia in segments like
health, education, agriculture, economic growth and good governance.
The agreement provides for USAID continuing to work with the
Government of Ethiopia and other international and local partners to
expand access to quality healthcare and services, improve education,
and advance a private-sector-led model of transformative economic
growth.

Over the past 20 years, the United States’ long-term investments in
Ethiopia amounted to more than US$13 billion in total assistance –
with over US$4 billion in the last five years alone – making the US
the largest assistance giving country to the East African country.

In the meantime, Ethiopia and Djibouti have agreed to keep logistics
between them undeterred while combating COVID-19. The two countries
reached a truce  after  the officials of both countries held an
in-depth virtual meeting. The use of Tajura Port, which has been built
to lessen the over-burdening of Port Djibouti, has also been raised
during the discussion. Ethiopia and Djibouti have also set up a joint
task force to start Beleho boarding pass and to sort out the issues
that are impeding the speedy implementation of the project.
