US Senate confirms appointment of Ambassador to Sudan

  • The US Senate has confirmed the appointment of John Godfrey as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the USA to Sudan. He will be the first fully ranked US ambassador to Sudan in 25 years.

The US Senate has confirmed the appointment of John Godfrey as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the USA to Sudan. He will be the first fully ranked US ambassador to Sudan in 25 years. So far, the country has been served by a deputy ambassador. Ambassador Godfrey is expected to take up his post in Khartoum soon

John Godfrey is a seasoned career diplomat with good exposure to the region. He served in Libya before the fall of Muammar Gaddafi. . Responding to his nomination, Godfrey said that he sees the nomination as a chance to continue the fight against terrorism – a key problem in the region.

Meanwhile, the US Congress approved a draft resolution last week, condemning the October 25, 2021, military coup, and voicing support for the people of Sudan. The military coup Godfrey said paused economic reforms and international support sparking off a fiscal crisis and hyperinflation, Godfrey said. Though US-Sudan relations improved following the overthrow of the Al Bashir regime and a movement toward democratic transition, relations between Washington and Khartoum came under strain after the military coup d’état of October 25 last year and the USA suspended all aid to Sudan.
