US reiterate need for investigation into Ugandan election

The United States have called for impartial, credible and thorough  investigations into Uganda’s January 14 elections. The US has reiterated its stand that the elections were marred by irregularities and abuses by security forces against opposition candidates.

In a statement , which also referred to the services being  rendered by the Ugandan forces for peacekeeping in the region, spokesperson of e U.S Department of State Ned Price  lamented that the US would consider a range of targeted options  to ensure that members of Uganda’s security forces would be held accountable for their actions committed during the conduct of elections held recently, when incumbent President Museveni retained power, trouncing the popular singer Bobi Wine, in a multi-cornered contest. Since then, there were a spate of protests and    arrests by the security forces of people supporting the opposition parties, particularly Bobi Wine.

Bobi Wine, the main challenger of Uganda President Yoweri Museveni took to twitter to express gratitude to the United States for “not keeping quiet about the most rigged elections in our nation’s history’’. He also tweeted that the people of Uganda would continue using all lawful actions to pursue good governance.

As reported by www.trendsnafrica.com, the noted singer Bobi Wine, who has a large followers in Africa as a singer  made an application to Uganda’s top court on Wednesday requesting to withdraw his election petition over the disputed polls citing, among other things,  the abduction, torture, harassment and intimidation by security forces of his followers. He alleged that these had taken place   at the watch of President Museveni and his Attorney General.  During the January 14 presidential and parliamentary elections, internet access was shut down by the state though  services were partially restored mid-January.
