US President Donald Trump had talks with two African leaders- South
Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa and Kenya’s Uhuru Kenyatta- pledging his
support to the two countries in particular and African region  in
general  for containing the Covid -19. Ramaphosa is the current
President of African Union, therefore, is the key person to be
contacted. Also, South Africa is the most impacted country on account
of the pandemics and has recently sought the help of Cuban doctors to
help the local healthcare professionals. This, however, did not go
well with President Trump and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who
accused Cuban authorities  of exploiting their doctors.

South Africa as of April 24 had 3,953 confirmed cases, 1,473
recoveries and 75 deaths. Kenya had 320 cases, 89 recoveries and 14
deaths. Both countries are dangerously behind the global race for
scarce medical equipment. Same, if not worse, is the case with other
African countries.  In the best case scenario, the United Nations
officials say 74 million test kits and 30,000 ventilators will be
needed  for taking up medical help for  1.3 billion people this year.
However, very few are in hand:  ten nations in Africa have no
ventilators at all.

Experts are still trying to make out the real reason behind President
Trump’s overreach to the two heads of States. Many speculate that the
November general elections in the US can be an overriding reason.
Trump is looking at the African American population as a major vote
bank for the coming elections. Recently, in many states in the US
people had protested against the lockdown, which was endorsed by Trump
and his Republican Party. A good number of the protesters were African
Americans, according to reports.
