Justifying its decision to roll over the sanctions on Zimbabwe, the US State Department said that the government of Zimbabwe under President Emmerson Mnangagwa has yet to bring about political and economic changes to ramp up the country’s reputation and to improve the freedom and rights of the people. The US also felt that the country’s democratic process has not improved since he took over the mantle. The country is not respecting the press freedom and the rights of the people to dissent. Mnangagwa had the support of other African leaders while calling on the US to lift the sanctions since it had debilitated the fledgling economy of the country.
