The United State Department has announced visa bans on specific individuals who disrupted recent elections in Nigeria.

The United State Department has announced visa bans on specific individuals who disrupted recent elections in Nigeria.

Quoting Secretary of State Antony Binken, the statement said that the US is fully committed to supporting and advancing democracy in Nigeria and around the world. The statement clarified that the action is directed at only specific individuals who tried to undermine the democratic process in a recent election in Nigeria and the restriction is directed to only these individuals and not the country. Family members of these individuals may also be subject to the restrictions.

Governorship elections in Osun, Ekiti, and Anambra states were the most recent elections held in the country. Nigeria is scheduled to hold its general elections to elect a new president and parliament on 25 February and 11 March. The United States, he said, is committed to supporting Nigeria’s efforts to fight corruption and strengthen democracy and the rule of law.
