The US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, while on her recent visit to Senegal stressed the deep relationship of the US with Africa, particularly countries in the Sahel region. She said that Washington offered more support to the region than other countries which professed against the US.

It may be recalled that the Biden administration has decided to send a series of high-profile delegations to different parts of Africa since the launch in December of a US effort to regain influence in the continent. Africa is now billed as the most happening continent unleashing enormous economic opportunities. That way the continent is witnessing heightened competition among world powers to become closer to her. Notable among these developments are the China and US efforts to become friendly with the continent’s governments.

Yellen is on a 10-day trip to Africa to rebuild the relationship, which had gone through a lackluster trajectory during the time of former President Donald Trump.

US president Joe Biden at the US-Africa summit held in December in Washington has promised to make his first visit as president to sub-Saharan Africa. Over 50 leaders from Africa attended the summit.  Yellen said the presidential visit would take place this year itself. Vice President Kamala Harris, who has roots in Africa and several ministers also would visit different countries on the continent. She promised Africa a partnership in development, investment, and trade in the areas of climate, health, and security.

Referring to the Russian approach to Africa, Yellen said that Russia’s war in Ukraine has pushed millions of Africans into poverty and hunger and accused Moscow of using food as a weapon.  Mentioning that Russia’s war in Ukraine was illegal, she said that the global economy could grow only when the illegal war got over at the earliest since it aggravated global inflation and debt burden, particularly in the African countries. She also noted the increasing presence of China in the continent and stressed that their practices of doing business with the continent have increased the debt burden of many African countries.
