In a significant development, the United States said it has taken steps to impose visa bans on persons who disrupted the recent general elections in Nigeria. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the United States was committed to supporting and advancing democracy in Nigeria and around the world, in a statement, published on the official website of the state department.
Blinken clarified that the visa ban was specific to certain individuals. He clarified that it was not directed at the Nigerian people or the Government of Nigeria as a whole. Those individuals reported to have been involved in election disruption, under US Immigration and Nationality Act, will be subject to restrictions on visas to the United States under a policy covering those believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining democracy; the statement said. Analysts maintain that identifying such persons would be a difficult task since the proof of their involvement would be difficult to gather.

Blinken said that the decision to take steps to impose visa restrictions reflected the continued commitment of the United States to support Nigerian aspirations to strengthen democracy and the rule of law. The US did not name the Nigerians affected by the latest visa ban. Nigeria’s recent presidential elections held on 25 February was fraught with a number of irregularities sparking violence in certain pockets.
