The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) and the
South African Cabin Crew Association (SACCA) are agitated over SA
Express informing staff that salaries cannot be paid amid a national
disaster.
Recently, the struggling airline wrote a letter to staff to say that
salaries would not be paid on time for March. Both NUMSA and SACCA
slammed the timing of this development in a joint statement released
by the two unions.
They said it was distressing that the airline would announce that
there was not enough money to pay employees’ salaries, which they said
is untenable. The unions said they made sincere efforts to support SA
Express for turning it round. But the management undermined their
efforts when the company was brought under the business rescue plan
,which they term as a reckless decision. The unions also claimed that
the bickering between SA Express business rescue practitioners and
the Department of Public Enterprises rendered the business rescue
process stagnant as salaries ran the risk of staying unpaid.
