UNICEF has ranked Nigeria as the second country out of the 163 countries globally facing the highest climate and environmental risks. Addressing the media, the chief of the Field Office, UNICEF Enugu, Mrs Juliet Chiluwe added that available data showed sinking groundwater levels in the country. She urged the federal government to set up efficient, accountable systems and improved sanitation services so that the UN water SDGB Global Acceleration Framework can be implemented. The sinking groundwater levels have led to the digging of wells twice as deep as ten years ago.

Mrs Chiluwe also pointed out that the erratic rainfall both deficit and intense, resulted in scarcity and floods that led to contamination of the scarce water supply. To deal with the situation, the Nigerian government needs to invest in providing safe drinking water.

Safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) specialist, UNICEF Field Office Enugu, Mr Doutimiye Kiakubu, said that the objective of holding world water day was to highlight the importance of water to life and living. He added that water is crucial to development and advocated the equitable and fair distribution of water resources. He urged all to improve water consumption and availability of pure water, free from chemical components.
