The UN will be launching peace negotiations between Sudanese military and civilian leaders in a bid to resolve the political crisis. The ruling military government welcomed the move. Civil activists have conveyed that they will be interested only if the agenda of the dialogue is the country’s transition to democracy. They have repeatedly stressed that they will not entertain any power-sharing agreement with the military.

The US is also putting pressure on the ruling government to restore peace.US had frozen its economic assistance to Sudan since the military coup in the country last October and halted $700 million (€623 million) in emergency assistance. In a recent statement, the US Embassy in Khartoum has further stressed that the US will not resume its paused economic assistance to Sudan until violence is abated with the restoration of civilian government.

The decision was announced after the US Assistant Secretary of State Molly Phee and special envoy for the Horn of Africa David Satterfield met with Sudanese civil society. The Us Embassy condemned the clampdown of the anti-coup protests and the use of violence against the protestors. According to reports, more than 70 protestors were killed by the security forces.
