A UN Aid of $65 million is to be disbursed for humanitarian needs in Ethiopia .Out of the total amount, about $40 million is earmarked for humanitarian programmes in the northern Tigray region.
Announcing the release of the funds, U.N. humanitarian chief Mark Lowcock said that Ethiopian lives and livelihoods were being destroyed by drought, and children suffer from malnutrition. The conflict in Tigray has worsened the civilian suffering and millions are struggling to access essential services and food, especially in some rural areas. It is estimated that more than 16 million people need assistance across Ethiopia, including an estimated 4.5 million in the Tigray region.
Fighting broke out between the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and the government of Ethiopia since November 2020 which forced thousands of Tigray residents to flee the country.
. The U.N. allocation of $40 million to emergency needs in Tigray, includes providing shelter and clean water as well as preventing and responding to sexual and gender-based violence. The remaining $25 million will fund humanitarian operations in the rest of Ethiopia, including in response to drought in the Somali and Oromia regions.
