The United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Solutions Alliance has launched its Africa office at Addis Ababa University. The announcement was made today with the participation of Finance Minister Ahmed Shide, Foreign Minister Gideon Timothy, Planning and Development Minister Fitsum Assefa, and other attendees.
This alliance unites innovative thinkers and technical specialists from around the globe to tackle challenges that impede sustainable development. The Addis Ababa office is set to conduct research and offer scientific solutions to inform policymakers.
Professor Jeffrey Sachs, the coalition’s president, highlighted that the main objective is to foster economic prosperity and social justice worldwide. He emphasized the importance of universities and stakeholders in devising solutions, noting that supporting governments is crucial for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. He also pointed out that the new office in Addis Ababa is aimed at addressing Africa’s needs.

Sachs acknowledged Ethiopia’s historical significance in global civilization through the African Union and recognized its recent rapid economic growth. Acting President of Addis Ababa University, Samuel Kifle (PhD), remarked that the Sustainable Development Goals play a vital role in fulfilling the African Union’s Agenda 2063. He stated that the university’s strong research and development capabilities will enhance this partnership, reinforcing their commitment to collaborate on sustainable development solutions.
