United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres was on a visit to Cabo Verde for the Ocean Race Summit recently.
Guterres said Cabo Verde was facing an existential crisis created by climate disruptions. The country is facing a severe drought as the sea level rises and the loss of biodiversity and ecosystems. Yet, he warned that world leaders are not taking the necessary action and making the investments needed to face this life-and-death emergency.
The Secretary-General urged justice for those who – like Cabo Verde – had practically done nothing to provoke this crisis; but were paying a very high price. In the past five years, the country has held an ‘Ocean Week’ every year. Recently, Cabo Verde partnered with the Ocean Race to hold a summit that featured speakers from all over the world, including the Secretary-General. The Secretary-General lauded the example of Cabo Verde while many political leaders were not paying attention to the central issues that threaten humanity.

Because of climate change, in the last few years, Cabo Verde fishermen have noted a drop in the capture of black mackerel, one of the most popular fish among the locals. In 2022, the packaging industry reported a reduction in the capture of tuna and the absence of black mackerel, raw materials for the industry. Other varieties of fish like albacore, a species of tuna, are expected to decrease by up to 45 percent. This trend of depleting ocean resources is also evident in other archipelagos also, particularly in the neighbouring Senegal-Mauritania basin.
