The army’s removal and detention of Burkina Faso President Roch Kabore after two days of unrest have sparked mixed reactions. United Nations chief Antonio Guterres issued a statement strongly condemning the attempted takeover of the government by force. The African Union (AU) also strongly condemned the “coup attempt” while the EU and the United States called for the release of President Kaboré. However, some sections of the anti-government protesters of Burkina Faso seemed jubilant at the development. The international concern is about the rising trend of a military coup in the west and Central Africa.

Since 2015, jihadist violence had ravaged Burkina Faso. The jihadist violence has killed more than 2,000 people in the past six years and forced 1.5 million to flee their homes. The public frustration against the inability of the government to arrest the jihadi violence has been mounting.
