The UN Security Council recently extended for just six months the United Nations’ political mission in Sudan. It may be recalled that UN envoy Volker Perthes was accused by Sudan’s army chief of stoking the worsening civil conflict.

The Council unanimously agreed to extend until December 3, 2023, the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan. Analysts are of the opinion that an extension for a limited duration reflects the delicate situation in the country. As reported by www.trendsnafrica.com, Sudan’s army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan last week accused Perthes of stoking the brutal conflict the army is fighting against paramilitaries.

In a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the army chief also asked him to name a replacement for Perthes. He further said that the envoy had committed “fraud and disinformation” in facilitating a political process that broke down. However, Guterres repeated his “full confidence” in Perthes. Perthes, who was in New York when Barhan made his accusation, is expected to return to the region in the coming days. He will have a stopover in Addis Ababa to meet with African Union officials.
