Libya’s political factions are holding a joint meeting in neighboring Morocco in a bid to set an agenda for another official session of the country’s House of Representatives. This is seen as a step for gearing up for meeting deadlines, with the hope of restoring sovereignty and stability of Libya.
In Morocco, they were discussing an agenda to hold an official session to discuss how the presidency of the House of Representatives can be changed. The internal regulations will be published and the House of Representatives will be organized and harmonized to take
Libya out of the political crisis. The meeting ended on November 25.
Held in Tangiers, Morocco, the meeting was primarily aimed at unifying the parliaments based in Tripoli and Tobruk. Those based in the Libyan capital Tripoli support the internationally-recognized Government of National Accord, while the representatives in Tobruk support Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, who contests the government’s legitimacy and authority.
The parties will discuss pending issues, such as the eligibility criteria and selection mechanism for executive positions; naming the head of the Presidential Council; naming the two deputies of the Presidential Council’s chair; and selecting the Prime Minister, among other things. The constitutional jurisdiction for organizing the elections, setting the date for holding a referendum on the constitution, and defining the powers of the dialogue committee in the event that parliament fails to approve the government, as well as pass the draft constitution and election laws are the other pricking points they would discuss at the meeting.
In the meantime, the Libyan army on Sunday said that it had spotted Haftar’s forces moving from the city of Benghazi to the west of the country. The government forces had detected the “noticeable mobilization” of Haftar’s militia. Significantly, some of the European countries like Germany and France said that they would impose sanctions on countries trying to thwart the peace deal between the warring groups in Libya.
